Hungarian: apparently from a diminutive of the vocabulary word árpa seed, barleycorn. It was the name of the Magyar chieftain who first conquered the territory that is modern Hungary, in the late 9th century, and who led his people to settle there. He is regarded as a national hero in Hungary, and many children are named after him.
